She worked as a middle school French teacher before moving to Brooklyn. Julia likes to bake, cook, travel, and read. She looks forward to planning interesting and fun events with her fellow Roundtable team members this year. |
Yiwen Sun, Co-President
Yiwen Sun is a second-year MA candidate in the Applied Linguistics track. She was born and raised in South China. Before coming to TC, she completed her undergraduate study at Sun Yat-sen University, majoring in English language and literature and minoring in German. During college, she attended an exchange program at Bamberg University, Germany. She initiated a research project on investigating the intercultural abilities of Chinese undergraduates. The results showed the lack of intercultural education in Chinese EFL classrooms, which prompted her to study Applied Linguistics for her post-graduate program. Her research interests include language socialization, home literacy practices, and bilingual education. After gaining a bachelor’s degree, she gained some teaching experience in China as an English teacher working in public and private schools. She loves swimming, hiking, and visiting museums in her spare time. She looks forward to communicating with more people based on the AL/TESOL Roundtable platform. |
Xiaohan Wang, Forum/ Research Co-Chair
My name is Xiaohan Wang, and I also go by Annie. I graduated from the English Language and Literature department at Fudan University and I am a second year student in the Applied Linguistics Program. I have abundant experiences in teaching Chinese and English in EFL and ESL contexts and I am passionate about Sociolinguistics and Second Language Acquisition. Outside the school, you can easily find me at Broadway theaters, museums, and bars. |
Yining Xu, Forum/Research Co-Chair
Yining is a second-year MA student in the Applied Linguistics track. She graduated with a BA in Modern Greek from Beijing Foreign Studies University back in China. Both her teaching experience in China and in Greece (during her exchange terms) confirmed her confidence in being an English teacher despite the fact that she is still a second language learner herself. During the pandemic, she found it both confusing and exciting to see how people swiftly adapt themselves to the online world, and would like to further explore with the roundtable how technology in the post-pandemic era affects language learning and teaching. She enjoys designing her own nails and diary, and is a passionate museum lover. Don’t hesitate if you want to talk about the desk crafts or want a museum trip with her! |
Miriah Ralston, Publicity/ Social Co-Chair
Miriah is an Ed.M. student in Applied Linguistics at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. She graduated from Oklahoma City University with her M.A. in TESOL with a focus on adult ESL education. Outside of school, Miriah enjoys reading sci-fi novels and exploring the parks and restaurants of Morningside Heights. |

Before moving to New York, she taught English in the Paris region for a year through TAPIF. Emmalee is interested in second language acquisition in children whose primary caregivers don't speak the target language. Outside of academics, Emmalee's hobbies include singing, trying new restaurants, and competing with friends in trivia. She's excited to be social chair in Roundtable and plan exciting events for her fellow students this year! |
