SooHyoung Joo (Co-chair) Soo is a second year MA Applied Linguistics student. Before coming to TC, she has taught EFL in a public middle school in South Korea for 3½ years. Her research interests include language assessment, Mobile Assisted Language Learning, and oral peer corrective feedback. She has also co-designed WikiTalki, an android application for peer feedback on speaking. She enjoys watching baseball and soccer games, snowboarding, and skydiving. |
Minhye (Michelle) Son (Co-chair) Michelle is a second year Ed.M. Applied Linguistics student with M.A in Bilingual/Bicultural Education and B.A. in TESOL K-12. Her research interests include various sociolinguistic topics such as linguistic human rights, language and culture, and language and identity. She loves spending time with her husband, Jinwoo, by playing card games, walking down the Riverside Park, or dining in East Village! |
Joshua Hurd (Social co-chair) Joshua Hurd is a second-year MA TESOL-General student with a background in secondary education as a French & German language teacher. His research interests include: bi- and multilingualism, sociolinguistics, vocabulary acquisition, and pedagogy. When he isn’t teaching or prowling the stacks of the library, you can find him sampling coffee and cakes in all five boroughs. |
Bashir Harrell (Social co-chair) Bashir is a second year MA Applied Linguistics students who spent four years teaching English in Osaka, Japan before arriving at Teachers College. His research interests include formulaic sequences in SLA and curriculum design. His other interests include writing, reading, board games, music and martial arts. |
Yu-Han Lin (Roundtable co-chair) Yu-Han Lin is an Ed.M. student in Applied Linguistics. Her intellectual interests lie in conversation analysis (CA), second language teaching and learning, classroom discourse analysis, and first language/dialect preservation. Her research interests stem in part from her solid background in teaching ESL/EFL and Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language (CSL/CFL). She enjoys bubble tea and cappuccino (especially Joe’s). Having an espresso machine enables her to enjoy a cup of cappuccino and desserts at home on snow days. |
Merryn Clay (Roundtable co-chair) Merryn Clay is a second year MA student in Applied Linguistics. Before coming to TC, she taught EFL in Ecuador and Chile for five years and ESL in Ithaca, NY for three years. She is interested in discourse analysis, prosody, pragmatics and corpus linguistics. She enjoys doing yoga, eating lobster, drinking wine, travelling and teaching — sometimes all at once. |
Allie Hope King (Research co-chair) Allie is a third-year Ed.M. Applied Linguistics student in the Language Use track. Prior to moving back to NYC to attend TC, she taught ESL in Pittsburgh, Hawai’i and Virginia. Her research interests include Conversation Analysis, co-teaching, multi-party social interaction, and adult education. In her rare and precious free time, she enjoys learning foreign languages, walking around Manhattan, and spending time with her amazing and nerdy friends. |
Allison Orr (Research co-chair) Allison is a second-year MA Applied Linguistics student. Before coming to TC, she taught ESL in Boston, LA, and DC and EFL in Taiwan and India. Her research interests include noticing theory, processing of formulaic language, and eye tracking. When she's not studying, she's most likely wandering around Flushing searching for a place that serves the best Taiwanese breakfast with 米漿. |
Rocky Wood (Finance co-chair) Rocky is a second-year MA Applied Linguistics student. Before TC she taught English in Italy, Indonesia, and South Korea. Her research interests include sociolinguistics, intercultural communication, bilingual education, and literacy. Her interests include coffee, trying new foods, scuba diving, reading, and more coffee. |
Jean Choi (Finance co-chair) Jean is a second year MA TESOL-General student with a background in linguistics, and is super excited to be a part of this amazing student organization. She was inspired to study TESOL through her experiences teaching adult immigrant students with no or interrupted formal education. Her research interests are constantly evolving, but they include: L1 inclusive teaching methods, adult literacy, unconventional classroom environments, sociolinguistcs, and second language acquisition. She loves to de-stress with horror movies, running, scratching on the violin, and making herself into a blanket burrito. |
Kholood Qumei (Publicity co-chair) Kholood is a second year MA TESOL K-12 student. Her interests include critical language pedagogy, adult/K-12 refugee education, and supporting students with interrupted formal education (SIFEs). When not completely inundated with work and other responsibilities, she enjoys hiking, cooking different kinds of curry and exploring bookstores. |
Xun (Peggie) Zhong (Publicity co-chair) Peggie is a second-year MA TESOL-General student who has taught English in EFL and ESL setting. Her research interests include: ESL/EFL pedagogy, conversation analysis, sociolinguistics, and second language acquisition. She is a fan of music. When she is free, she enjoys playing the Ukulele and Violin. At weekends, the best moment for her is to have brunch at a Dim Sum restaurant with her friends. She also likes walking around Manhattan and watching the sunset on the Hudson River. |
